Press Release
United Way Building Sold

Dayton, OH, Tuesday, February 2, 2010
- United Way of the Greater Dayton Area's Board of Directors announced today that it has accepted an offer from an undisclosed buyer to purchase the Community Services Building at 184 Salem Avenue in Dayton.

“The sale of the building will significantly reduce United Way’s operating budget and allow us to focus on raising money to address the growing needs in our community,” said Allen Elijah, United Way President.

“It was time to get out of the landlord business,” said Elijah.  “Managing the building took too much time away from our mission."

Since Elijah officially took the helm last May, the organization has been drastically reducing administrative expenses, including staff reductions and putting the building up for sale.

United Way is currently working with Gem Real Estate Group to pursue more cost-effective office space.  The organization expects to relocate in May.

The current site of the United Way offices and several nonprofit agencies was built in the early 1950s to provide a centralized location for United Way’s forerunner the Community Chest and several of the partner agencies.  A gift from the Rike-Kumler Company served as the catalyst for the construction, with the remaining funds raised through a capital campaign.  The Community Chest held the deed to the building.
