United Way Recognizes Legacy Leaders

Dayton, OH, July 29, 2008
- United Way of the Greater Dayton Area honored three community leaders for their legacy of service today:  Bob Margolis, John Moore, and Fred Smith.

In appreciation for their many years of dedicated service to the community, United Way utilized the services of a professional oral historian / writer to preserve for future generations the wisdom and guidance of these three gentlemen in the form of a Legacy Folio.

Their individual stories have been chronicled, and United Way Board members presented copies of the completed Legacy Folios to Margolis, Moore, and Smith at a luncheon in their honor.  They were selected for this inaugural event for:
•    Imparting lasting legacies in our community.
•    Providing a solid framework which community leaders can use in shaping the Dayton region for the demands of the 21st century and beyond.
•    Sharing their wisdom, giving their time, and demonstrating true collaboration.

A native Daytonian, Margolis is a graduate of Steele High School and the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School.  He served in the Navy during World War II.  He rose through the ranks of the family business, The Metropolitan Clothing Company, and in the late 1970s became involved with GZK, the franchise holder of area Arby’s and Lee’s Famous Recipe stores.  Margolis was the local United Way Campaign Chair in 1964 and Board Chair in 1970.

Smith is a graduate of Cornell University and Harvard Business School.  He held various procurement positions in the Army Air Corps.  He spent thirty years at the Huffy Corporation rising to the position of Chairman and CEO.  Smith led the United Way campaign in 1976 and chaired the board in 1981 and 1982; he continued on the United Way Public Policy Committee through 2008.

A nearly lifelong resident, Moore is a graduate of Steele High School and the University of Dayton, from which he also received an honorary doctoral degree in Human Letters.  He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.  His career at Wright Patterson Air Force Base spanned three decades, culminating as Chief of the Base Civilian Personnel Office.  Moore chaired the United Way Board in 1983 and 1984.

United Way is keeping copies of the Legacy Folios as part of the organization’s historical archives and plans to honor additional long-time volunteers and community leaders in the future.
