Dayton Urban League
Ashlee was in the 4th grade when she attended her first Dayton Urban League Resilient Young Ladies program at her school.  She was shy and quiet.  Her family life wasn’t the best and at times she would come to school unkempt.  Over time, the Urban League staff member learned that Ashlee had to be the adult.  She got herself dressed, caught the bus, and came to school on her own 98% of the time.

Ashlee didn’t like to read, primarily because she didn’t think she was good at it.  So when the group had to read a story she would never participate.  One day the program leader had the girls read plays to show off their acting ability and read aloud.  She gave Ashlee a part that repeated two lines, “I am the lion” or “But I am the lion!”  She wouldn’t have to worry about getting it wrong, and it was an important role in the play.  After that day, Ashlee began to really participate and wanted to act out plays all the time.  Her teachers noticed that her grades improved, she started to have more confidence when reading aloud, and she felt better about herself.

The Dayton Urban League, a United Way Partner Agency, is receiving $195,014 in United Way contributions this year.  United Way funding helps support vocational assistance programs for the economically disadvantaged and programs ensuring positive youth development for children like Ashlee.
